Anthropos Metron | Iets by Jan Hoet Jr. | Aug 1 - Aug 8, 2019 | Ghent (BE)

Anthropos Metron, Charles Degeyter’s first solo exhibition, takes its title from the Greek dictum Anthropos metron panton, meaning “Man is the measure of all things.” The exhibition examines the position of humanity in relation to the natural world and the objects it produces. The works include hermit crabs inhabiting the heads of Funko Pop figures based on characters from Disney’s Hercules, and perler-bead mosaics depicting confrontations between domestic cats and their artificial counterparts. Living organisms and manufactured objects appear side by side, bringing together references to popular culture, nature and classical mythology. References to ancient Greek and Roman culture recur throughout Degeyter’s work. In this exhibition, they are combined with contemporary consumer objects and materials. The works consider the distinction between the natural and the artificial, and the extent to which human activity shapes the world around us. The title raises the question of how humanity measures and defines its own place within that world.
